online Julie Jocsak QMI Agency Niagara The first polo match in 13 years in NOTL was held on the Common by Butler's Barracks Saturday. Julie Jocsak QMI Agency Niagara The sound of horses' hooves pounding the field at Butler's Barracks used to be fairly common. But that was a long, long time ago. ?The last was about 13 years ago ? and we brought it back,? said George Dell, director of the Friends of Fort George and chair of Polo Niagara, which was held at the historic site in Niagara-on-the-Lake this weekend. A lot of money was spent on the field to make it playable," said Dell. We had to put 80 tons of sand and seed to level it." The improvements to the field were donated by Rankin Construction of St. Catharines. A large crowd lined the field in anticipation of the event, which soldiers over the past three centuries have played there during their down time while camped in the area. And there were of course the hats, in just about every shape, size and colour. See Page 4
